Mimi Stewart is member of the New Mexico State Senate, representing District 17 since 2015. Stewart worked as a special education teacher in the Albuquerque Public Schools where she taught for several years before entering politics. Stewart was elected President Pro Tempore of the New Mexico Senate in January 2021, a leadership position she holds as of 2025 . She has been recognized for her legislative effectiveness, having passed over 170 bills into law since 1996. A staunch advocate for education, in 2025, she introduced the Advancing the Science of Reading Act, aiming to promote structured literacy in teacher preparation programs further strengthening SB 398 requiring training in the Science of Reading for all teachers.
