Session Overview:This interactive professional development session is modeled after
The Amazing Race and is designed to engage educators in hands-on exploration of the six core functions of small group instruction: Pre-teaching, Monitoring, Re-teaching, Enrichment, Facilitating, and Previewing.
Participants will “travel” through learning stations—each aligned to one of the six functions—working collaboratively to complete tasks, collect stamps in a themed passport, and reflect on classroom applications. The session culminates in a digital escape room challenge, where teams apply what they've learned to solve instructional puzzles in a race to the finish.
Session Goals:- Deepen teacher understanding of the purpose and function behind small group instruction
- Provide practical tools and planning structures for immediate classroom use
- Model engagement strategies that teachers can replicate with students
Instructional Implications:In literacy classrooms, small group instruction plays a critical role in meeting diverse student needs. This session helps teachers move beyond routine grouping and into purposeful, function-driven practice that enhances student engagement and achievement.
I'd love the opportunity to share this experience with educators across the state and contribute to the ongoing conversation around high-quality, differentiated literacy instruction. I may need to streamline some of the activities to fit an hour long block instead of 90 minutes as I have used before, but I am prepared to do so.
Please let me know if there's anything further you need from me to consider this proposal. Thank you for your time!
