Supporting literacy across all content areas does not have to look like reading novels, teaching foundational reading, and having students write paragraphs. Disciplinary Literacy is the concept that students are aware of the thinking required for success in each content area or discipline. When students enter the classroom, they need to be able to think like a mathematician, analyze various historical events, understand career- or trade-specific vocabulary, and experiment like a scientist. These skills are essential in empowering students to be literate in all disciplines.
