In this session, Dr. Nancy Young will provide an overview of the continuum of ease in learning to read and write and the instructional implications. As she explains the features and terms within her widely recognized translational framework, The Ladder of Reading & Writing© (2023). Nancy will emphasize the importance of differentiation to serve the broad range of needs in today’s classrooms, from students who are experiencing challenges learning to read to students are advanced in reading for their age. Nancy will focus especially on the terms “explicit”, “implicit”, “systematically designed”, “comprehensive analytical” and “extended learning/acceleration”. While drawing attention to WHO, WHAT, WHY, and HOW, Nancy will encourage attendees to think about the evolving science of reading movement, current swings happening in the field, and gaps in the existing research. Note: In this session, Nancy will be referencing chapters from her co-edited professional development book “Climbing THE LADDER OF READING & WRITING: Meeting the Needs of ALL Learners” (2024).
