About me
Charlie Bergman began his teaching career in 1989 when he joined the faculty of Cate School in Carpinteria, California. There he created a model high-school Asian Studies curriculum focusing on China and Japan.
Charlie then pursued leadership positions in independent schools, serving as upper-school director at La Jolla Country Day School in La Jolla, California, and head of school at Oregon Episcopal School in Beaverton, Oregon.
After five years working with a business consultancy focused on China, Charlie returned to teaching in 2004 at Albuquerque Academy, where he taught international relations, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern history, and Western philosophy.
In 2018, Charlie was appointed director of the Office of Personal and Professional Development (OPPD), the career services office at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
In 2023, Charlie relinquished his role as director of OPPD to focus on financial literacy for St. John’s College students and staff, and for New Mexican students in collaboration with PED.
Charlie holds a B.A. in mathematics from Amherst College; an M.S. in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley; and an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Stanford University.
Charlie is married to Shulin Bergman, a native of Taiwan, and has two adult children, Elizabeth Lafferty and Will Bergman.
